Football
Football is an emerging sport at Denstone and draws on a lot of talented boys and girls who compete in strong local leagues; several of whom are affiliated to local academies. The progamme relies on 3 FA qualified coaches and a partnership with Birmingham City Football club.
In the junior years all boys, and in increasing number of girls, have the opportunity to play football in our twice weekly extra-curricular activity slot. These sessions are supported by formal coaching sessions from Birmingham City. The boys at this level get the chance to play some competitive matches with entrance into the National Independent Schools cup competitions and a few friendly games against local state and independent schools. The weekly activity slot also provides the opportunity for a year round junior House competition.
At U15 level the boys begin to play more competitive matches, starting in September with the Independent Schools tournament and continuing in the Lent term when all boys and girls can opt for football as their main sport and participate in a fuller fixture list of Independent and local state schools.
In 5th and 6th form football has a full programme. The U16s and 1st X1 enter the Society of Heads Cup national competitions in addition to the Independent Schools tournament. Training sessions run three times a week and there is also a full fixture list in the Lent term including 1st, 2nd, 3rd XI and U16 fixtures.
This year U17 Tom Pochin represented a successful Staffordshire county side at U18 and on completing his sixth form will set off to Saudi with the intention of securing a professional contract.
